Journey to Yalta
Today’s Yalta sprouted on the location of a Tauric settlement that existed in the first century C.E. nearby the former Chekhovo village. Near the city archeologists discovered objects dating from the stone and the iron ages.
Tourists from the world over come to visit the Livadia palace, where the legendary Yalta conference took place in February 1945 with the participation of the heads of three partner countries: the USSR, USA and Great Britain. In Yalta there are many other sites of interest - the Nikitsky botanical garden, the Anton Chekhov house-museum, the Chuan-tsu waterfall, the “Skazka” (Fairytale) zoo and the foothills of Ai-Petri. The Masonic temple and the waterfront, lively and busy, living its own life separate from the city, also do not leave us indifferent. The Vorontsov Palace located in not far away Alupka fills out our tour route nicely.
Once arrived in Yalta you will undoubtedly hear the expression “Большая Ялта” (Big Yalta). For its strangeness it is nevertheless not a lapse in language. Big Yalta is a significant part of the South Shore of the Crimea along a stretch of 70 km, from the village of Foros to the west to the village of Krasnokamenka to the east. The city of Yalta itself is the administrative and resort center of the coast. On the territory of Big Yalta the visitor will find firms for the production of wine and tobacco products, essential oils and fruit and vegetable orchards. The local wine brand “Massandra” enjoys world-wide recognition. In the last few years many new apartment buildings and spa-centers have been built in Yalta. brought about by large beautification projects. Here can be felt and experienced Ukraine’s only subtropical climate zone which begins over the pass, very close to the city indeed.
The southern-most point of Ukraine differs very much in atmosphere and local color from what can be seen in the capital. This is why NovaMova offers its students the unique opportunity to visit these places.
