Lviv Tour

Without a doubt, the top attraction and premier tourist destination in western Ukraine is the gorgeous city of Lviv.

Today it is a vibrant city of nearly a million people that is proud of its long and glorious history, rich heritage, and architectural beauty.

This trilingual city is a melting pot of diverse influences, as befits a country at the crossroads of the world, inhabited by well-traveled and novelty-seeking entrepreneurs, merchants, soldiers, and gentry.

Considerable immigrant populations of Germans, Austrians, Hungarians, Czechs, Poles, Russians, Armenians, Jews, etc. have left their mark on the city over the ages.

It is difficult to write about Lviv in a boring way. You will quickly understand why when your train puffs into the huge, time-worn train station, making you feel as if you have just taken a trip in a time machine.

This feeling will only grow stronger when you step out onto the city’s narrow streets and passageways, each of which tells you stories of their own rise and fall.

It all started in 1256, when Danylo Romanovych, Prince of Galicia and Volyn, named a newly founded city after his son Lev.

The strategic location immediately made the town a desired destination for conquerors attracted to the fast-growing wealth of Lviv.

Over the following centuries Lviv or Lwow or Lemberg changed hands numerous times Tatars, Turks, Moldavians, Poles and later Austro-Hungarians ruled the city, leaving recognizable traces on city to the present day.

Local townspeople are known for their love of art, literature, traditional crafts and… coffee.

Myriad kaviarnias (coffeehouses) are open throughout the day and night. This is where most local business deals are made. These kaviarnias are small places, each with its own history, interior design and secret for making a perfect cup of kava (coffee).

Historically, people here have always loved good drinks. Among the popular ones in Lviv were horilka mead. Wine was also very common. In addition to wines from Greece, Spain, Italy and Hungary, the city manufactured its own wines.

Vineyards used to grow at the site of today's Lysenko Street and Klepariv. But the favorite drink was beer, which in those days Lviv exported all the way to Bavaria.

It took six weeks to get the beer there, but it did not spoil in that time. Hardly any modern beer would stand up to such a test. Today you can visit the Beer Museum, still located at the local brewery, and enjoy the taste-testing the beer as a part of the tour.

It is almost impossible to visit all significant museums in Lviv over just one weekend.

NovaMova has developed an eventful and informative tour schedule that includes the places you can’t afford to miss.
